Ludlow, Ma – The Ludlow Lions JV Basketball team needed overtime to escape the South Hadley Tigers (12-2). The Lions were down by double digits early in this game but used some intense defensive pressure to close the Tigers lead down to 4 points at half time. To start the third quarter the Lions were slow offensively but they eventually got things going and outscored the Tigers 12 to 7 in the third frame.
The Lions relied on their Freshman class in the fourth quarter. Freshmen Christopher Fogg (8 points) and Jonathan Dubour (4 points) provided the defensive spark to help generate turnovers and easy baskets for the Lions. Down three points late in the game Freshman Michael Szewczyk (8 points) stepped up and buried a three point bucket to put the game into overtime. Once in overtime the Lions outscored the Tigers 7 to 6 to seal the victory. Correction Freshman Ethan Schwartz outscored the Tigers in overtime. Ethan had all 7 of the Lions points as he knocked down some nice shots on his drives to the hoop. He also went 1 for 2 from the foul line in overtime.
For the Tigers, Shawn Mitchell finished with 10 points and sharp shooter Kyle Johnson had 9 points.
The Lions are now 9 and 7 on the season. The Lions will be looking for a season high 3 game win streak on Thursday night at Palmer. The Lions beat the Panthers about three weeks ago by 3 points in a physical match up.
